PB 1 A Lottery Tickets

The genre I chose to analyze are lottery tickets. Lottery tickets are a dangerous game played by adults 18 years older and up. There is not a particular target audience for this genre, it is played by all adults of all ages. Both the elderly and the kid who just turned 18 today play this game. The player is someone who wants a chance to change their lives, and relieve some of the financial pressure they have on them. The lottery ticket serves two main purposes. The first purpose of the lottery ticket is to act as a receipt for a person who spent money to enter a game to win a prize, usually in the form of cash. This receipt usually contains a code of numbers that are either chosen by random by the computer, or handpicked by the particular player. These numbers that are on the ticket must completely match the numbers that are chosen by the lottery organizers in order for the player to win the prize. This form of a lottery ticket can typically seen when the player purchases a ticket to play the game of Powerball or Mega Millions. The receipt can be redeemed by the player as proof that he or she has won the prize. The prize is usually millions of dollars that can potentially change the winner’s life. The second purpose of the lottery ticket is to act as physical game that can be played by one or more person. In this example the lottery ticket is usually of the scratch off variety. A player must use a device to scratch off a certain amount of spots on one particular card in hopes of winning a prize, which is usually money. The style of most lottery tickets seem to follow a pattern. Most lottery tickets feature bright colors with big bold letters usually containing words like millions or thousands to catch the person’s eye, and invite them in to make them want to purchase the ticket. There are usually huge pictures of twenty dollar bills plastered onto the back of the lottery ticket to make the person become interested in all the money they could possibly win by purchasing this ticket. There are also usually many phrases stating to the people playing how easy it is for them to win this money, and how having this money can change their live. . Many of the lottery tickets also make a connection to Ireland and leprechauns somewhere on the ticket. The reason behind this is because these two symbols are usually connected to the idea of luck. When playing this game luck is exactly what the player wants and needs to win the money on the lottery ticket. The tone of the lottery tickets are usually very uplifting and encouraging to the player. The tone is uplifting to hopefully draw the player in to make the player want to buy more tickets down the road, because they believe they have a realistic chance of winning the money.

How to annotate

I like to highlight statements and questions the author of the piece makes that really stood out to me. I also like to highlight definitions of the main topics of the piece that I find throughout the writing piece. I make many written statements on the margins of the piece indicating whether or not I agree with the statement the author is making. I also connect the piece to my own personal experiences. I make many notes to jog my memory when I take a second look at the writing piece. The peers in my group all did similar things to how I annotate my writing pieces. Some things I did notice that they did differently was that they color codded their annotations into different sections. They also made bullet points to organize the piece into chunks which really helps to simplify the piece you are writing. I liked all these techniques and plan to utilize them in my own annotations int the future. Annotating a piece of writing is important because it helps jog your memory of the writing piece after spending some time away from the piece. It also makes you look differently at a piece of writing. It causes you to really think critically on the writing piece and pick out all the patterns and details that the author included in the piece. It takes reading comprehension to a whole new level.

About Me

Hi! My name is Chris, and this is my first semester here at Penn State Abington. I plan to major in Accounting or education, I have not yet decided. I am very excited to begin taking college classes here at Abington. A little about myself, I was born on July seventh in Langhorne PA. I have an older brother who is a senior at Lehigh University, and a younger sister who is a senior in high school. I live in Newtown PA, and I graduated high school from Council Rock North. In high school I participated in many different activities including FBLA, lacrosse, and I was a member of the Council Rock North marching band. Outside of school I like to spend time with my family and friends. I also enjoy relaxing nights with my four cats named Nemo, Sam, Bella, and Toby, as well as my dog named Mandala. During the summer I visited my grandparent's beach house on Long Beach Island, and I also took a trip to Washington DC. I am really looking forward to getting involved this year around campus, and making many new friends. I am also excited to become a more independent person, and not rely on my friends and family to help me. Me and writing have always butted heads, but I am excited for this year to hopefully enhance myself as a writer and learn how to write on the college level. I can't wait to have an awesome semester with all of you!
