PB 1 A Lottery Tickets

The genre I chose to analyze are lottery tickets. Lottery tickets are a dangerous game played by adults 18 years older and up. There is not a particular target audience for this genre, it is played by all adults of all ages. Both the elderly and the kid who just turned 18 today play this game. The player is someone who wants a chance to change their lives, and relieve some of the financial pressure they have on them. The lottery ticket serves two main purposes. The first purpose of the lottery ticket is to act as a receipt for a person who spent money to enter a game to win a prize, usually in the form of cash. This receipt usually contains a code of numbers that are either chosen by random by the computer, or handpicked by the particular player. These numbers that are on the ticket must completely match the numbers that are chosen by the lottery organizers in order for the player to win the prize. This form of a lottery ticket can typically seen when the player purchases a ticket to play the game of Powerball or Mega Millions. The receipt can be redeemed by the player as proof that he or she has won the prize. The prize is usually millions of dollars that can potentially change the winner’s life. The second purpose of the lottery ticket is to act as physical game that can be played by one or more person. In this example the lottery ticket is usually of the scratch off variety. A player must use a device to scratch off a certain amount of spots on one particular card in hopes of winning a prize, which is usually money. The style of most lottery tickets seem to follow a pattern. Most lottery tickets feature bright colors with big bold letters usually containing words like millions or thousands to catch the person’s eye, and invite them in to make them want to purchase the ticket. There are usually huge pictures of twenty dollar bills plastered onto the back of the lottery ticket to make the person become interested in all the money they could possibly win by purchasing this ticket. There are also usually many phrases stating to the people playing how easy it is for them to win this money, and how having this money can change their live. . Many of the lottery tickets also make a connection to Ireland and leprechauns somewhere on the ticket. The reason behind this is because these two symbols are usually connected to the idea of luck. When playing this game luck is exactly what the player wants and needs to win the money on the lottery ticket. The tone of the lottery tickets are usually very uplifting and encouraging to the player. The tone is uplifting to hopefully draw the player in to make the player want to buy more tickets down the road, because they believe they have a realistic chance of winning the money.

  1. Love your choice of genre! I think that your totally right, most lottery tickets come with bright colors and bold text, to try and get people to buy more lottery tickets, and I'm sure it works. Personally, I wouldn't buy a lottery ticket because I don't want to waste the money that I worked really hard on and just give it away, but I applaud people who do, who have that kind of confidence and/or hope that they could win a big jackpot.

  2. Lottery tickets is a great genre to analyze! I agree with you on the style of the tickets. Usually they are bright and bold, making them stand out in the store and they do in fact catch people’s attention. And I find it interesting how they have money on the actual ticket. As you said, the ticket represents the cash the customer could potentially win, so maybe seeing money on the card motivates people? And I also agree with the tone. It’s very uplifting and hopeful… up until the player doesn’t win anything. Then it can get depressing. Do you think that even if the player wins five dollars they will go back and buy more tickets? Or does it depend on what kind of money they win?
